President Obama announces deployment of 2500 Marines to Australia, in bid to intimidate China: "At a joint early-evening press conference, the two leaders outlined a plan to deploy a small number of U.S. Marines to Darwin and Northern Australia beginning in 2012, with 250 staying for six-month stints and eventually building up to a 2,500-person Marine Air Ground Task Force.
“We are here to stay. This is a region of huge strategic importance to us,” Obama said, previewing his Thursday speech before Parliament, in which he will lay out his vision for U.S. involvement in the Asia-Pacific. “Even as we make a host of important fiscal decisions back home, this is right up there at the top of my priority list. We will make sure we are able to fulfill our leadership role in the Asia-Pacific region.”"
